PARANORMAL TERMINOLOGY

 

Akashic Records: Originally a Hindu concept of a vast, and ever increasing, psychic repository of every thought and emotion – human or otherwise – which has ever been, and into which some individuals seem able to tap.

 

Alchemy: The exploration and application of the sciences, particularly chemistry and the pseudo-science of astrology, such as they were understood during the middle ages and early Renaissance period. Alchemists were chiefly dedicated to the worthy pursuit of producing gold from baser metals and various materials.

 Apparition: A supernatural manifestation of a person (dead or living), animals or objects. Ghosts are apparitions of dead people.

Archangel: Elder or higher-ranking angels who are said to guide the spiritual lives of populations of people, rather than individuals who are tended to by angels.

Astral Travel: Belief or theory that a person\’s spiritual awareness can temporarily detach itself from the physical body, remaining connected by what is called the “silver cord,” and experience things in other locations, time frames or dimensional planes. Some refer to this as “Astral Projection” or “Mind Projection.”

Attachment: The seeming connection a haunting or entity may have with an item, such as furniture or other personal belonging. Often, this type of haunting is noticed when an item is first brought into a location. When the item is again removed, the events related to the haunting cease.

 

Cleansing: A less ritualized form of exorcism, where-in a dwelling or site is purified and malevolent influences are banished through prayers, spoken as the petitioner moves through the area.

Clairaudience: The power or faculty of hearing something not present to the ear but regarded as having objective reality.

Clairsentience: Ability to perceive or experience the emotions of others without the use of the normal five physical senses. A general term for clairvoyance and clairaudience.

 

Clairvoyance: The power or faculty of discerning objects not present to the senses OR Ability to perceive matters beyond the range or ordinary perception.

Cryptozoology: The study and pursuit of cryptids, creatures traditionally considered mythical, folkloric or previously extinct. Example: Bigfoot, Chupacabra, Loch Ness Monster.

Debunk: To show something wrong or false. When an investigator finds simple and logical explanation for paranormal activity. Just because certain things can be debunked doesn't mean there is no paranormal activity, it just means that those portions of the activity may be ruled out as paranormal. 

 

Disembodied Voice: A voice or noise that lacks an explainable source.

 

Demon: Hostile and resentful entity, supposedly of non-human origin, which some believe to be “fallen (from grace) angels.

 

Druid: A Celtic priest of the Bronze or Iron Age, trained in healing, divination and astronomy, whose tradition was passed on to successors by oral tradition.

 

Elementals: Spirits which govern the four corners of the earth and are associated with, or reside within, the four basic elements. They are called Sylphs (the east, air), Salamanders (the south, fire), Undines (the west, water), and Gnomes (the north, earth).

EMF:  Electromagnetic Radiation is energy that as it penetrates the surrounding areas creates EMFs.  All electronic, appliances, power wires, and power lines produce EMFs.  At higher levels EMFs can cause health issues and ill effects to humans.  A spike of an EMF from an unknown is theorized to be a ghost/spirit.

 

Empath: An individual who is particularly sensitive to the psychic emanations of his or her surroundings, even to a degree of telepathically receiving and experiencing the emotions of others in their proximity. Obviously, psychic empathy can be regarded as a mixed blessing, and the empath must learn to gain a measure of control over this ability.

 

EVP: The abbreviation for “electronic voice phenomena,” which refers to noises of a paranormal nature that cannot be heard with the human ear but are recorded by electronic devices.

 

Ghost: Typically refers to the soul of a deceased human (or animal) that continues to exist in some form on an earthly plane without “crossing over.”

 

Inhuman Entity: A supernatural being such as a demon that did not begin its existence in human form.

 

Intelligent Haunting: Activity resulting from an aware ghost or spirit that interacts with its environment.

Matrixing: When the mind starts seeing familiar patterns in things. Like when you look at a cloud and see familiar shapes like faces and animals that's matrixing. The human mind has a natural tendency to interpret sensory and see familiar shapes like faces and animals. The human mind has a natural tendency to interpret sensory input

Orb: An often translucent, circular anomaly (or “ball of light”) seen in photography -- and sometimes with the naked eye, that may be, depending on your theory, a bug, speck of dust, reflection, moisture or spirit energy.

 

Paranormal: Refers to anything outside or beyond current scientific explanation.

 

Pareidolia: Also known as “matrixing,” it is the brain’s perception of a meaningful pattern within random sounds or images.

Pentagram: A symbol of protection and invocation. Always depicted point-up. Symbolizes the union of the five basic elements.

 

Phenomenon:

1. An observable fact or event.

2. An object or aspect known through the senses rather than by thought or intuition; a temporal or spatiotemporal object of sensory experience as distinguished from a noumenon; a fact or event of scientific interest susceptible of scientific description and explanation

3. A rare or significant fact or event b plural phenomenon; an exceptional, unusual, or abnormal person, thing, or occurrence.

 

Poltergeist: A noisy usually mischievous ghost held to be responsible for unexplained noises.

 

Possession: The state where an entity inhabits and exerts a level of control over a living thing or object.

 

Residual Haunting: Repetitive paranormal activity resulting from the energy imprint of a person or event in time. The ghostly participants of these time-displacements often seem unaware of their living observers.

 

Shadow Person: A commonly reported inky black humanoid entity that moves fast, it is often spotted out of the corner of the eye and has been interpreted to be anything from a ghost or demon, to alien, time traveler or inter-dimensional being.

 

Spirit: As opposed to a ghost, a spirit is normally the soul of the deceased that has crossed over and exists in a spiritual or metaphysical plane.

 

Supernatural: Typically referring to the laws of nature do not apply to this realm.

 

Vortexes or Vortices: An anomaly which sometimes shows up in still photographs taken at the site of a suspected haunting, appearing as a translucent white, tube or funnel shaped mass. Some researchers believe this may be a porthole to the spirit realm.

 

Xenoglossia: sometimes also known as xenolalia, is the paranormal phenomenon in which a person can speak or write a language he or she could not have acquired by natural means.
